Most clinicians think I only read neuroscience and biomechanics. š Turns out this week's podcast guest Donis Gil both love the same book!
It's one of the most impactful books Iāve ever read for my clinical practice? The 5 Love Languages.
It sounds āsoft,ā but hereās the reality: Therapeutic Alliance is the backbone of what we do. If you arenāt speaking your patientās language, you arenāt connecting. And if you arenāt connecting, they arenāt getting better as fast as they could.
Think about it:
šµWords of Affirmation: Some patients need that constant "You're doing great," or "This progress is huge."
šµActs of Service: Maybe itās making them a coffee, or going the extra mile to coordinate with their doctor.
šµReceiving Gifts: Educational handouts, a free roll of tape, or even just your undivided time.
šµQuality Time: Deep listening during the eval without looking at your EMR.
šµPhysical Touch: Manual therapy! For some, the hands-on approach is the primary way they feel cared for and "listened to."
The "magic" happens when you stop treating every patient with your preferred style and start adapting to theirs. You fill their "trust tank," and suddenly, compliance goes up, and pain levels go down. š
Are you speaking your patientās language, or just your own?
Letās discuss in the commentsāhow do you build a quick alliance with your "tough" patients? Have you read the book? If not, it's a MUST read if you want to get along with your significant other and help with most other interactions.
