Stop mashing away at someone's guts! I used to do this for years, fortunately, no one ever got hurt. I see youtube videos of people doing bottoms up kettlebells to release the psoas. Does it improve pain and motion, sure, but it is needed? Definitely not! I use this technique after clearing the lumbar spine with repeated motions and if someone has painful/limited hip flexion, especially with closed chain/squat. If the involved side has slightly more tone to the light push of a fist, have the patient do a few diaphragmatic breaths and then have them exhale 4-5 times as long as the inhale. The net effect will be a tuning down of the nervous system and decrease in tone. Your fist will slightly sink in, but don't go too deep! It's not needed! Recheck passive hip flexion/IR and if it's improved, load it up in slow eccentric squats like a goblet squat! Repeated hip flexion 10 times hourly should keep the motion then they have to keep it loaded and possibly strengthen the hip flexors as well. New course locations in the calendar!
