[00:00:00] that if I wanted to be that million dollar clinic instead of just somebody who just shows up,

[00:00:05] then I needed to start acting like it now. Right? Like was I going to be average? Was I going to

[00:00:10] take the talent that I have and just show up and wing it or was I going to work for it?

[00:00:15] And it has really just a powerful lesson for me in continuing to be ready, continuing to grow

[00:00:21] and make growth a huge value of mine that I'm going to work on that every day so when those

[00:00:26] moments do come that I can step into. Welcome, you've entered the Physical Therapy Owners Club

[00:01:03] Hello ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Physical Therapy Owners podcast. I'm your host

[00:01:10] Adam Robin and today we have a very special guest, a first-time guest,

[00:01:14] a new friend of mine, new coach to the team. His name is Mr. Corey Lee.

[00:01:19] Corey, what's up brother? Awesome. Well thanks for letting me join you for a podcast episode.

[00:01:24] Looking forward to our conversation and really just honor and looking forward to maybe adding

[00:01:29] value to your listeners today. Heck yeah. I'm all about some value man. Let's go.

[00:01:36] I've really enjoyed, you know this is our what third time this week we get to get on a call

[00:01:40] together. Yeah right. Pretty fun huh? Blessed man, blessed. Yeah it's been cool. I'm my wife all the time.

[00:01:46] Hashtag blessed life. Hashtag blessed. It's awesome man you just be present with people,

[00:01:52] give value to people and then you come into contact with new people and

[00:01:55] possibilities just change right? It's fun. It's fun. Tani introduced us. Yeah. Tani said,

[00:02:02] man you got to meet this guy Corey. I'm like who's this guy Corey? What's so special about

[00:02:06] this guy? And then you came in you gave a leadership talk to some of our clients. I

[00:02:11] got to listen to it. It was amazing and through a series of conversations we decided maybe it would

[00:02:16] be fun for you to help coach some of our coaching clients. Yeah. And so I thought it

[00:02:20] would be super cool to bring you on listen to what you have to say and maybe give you some

[00:02:25] space to introduce yourself and talk about your story and talk about how you help people.

[00:02:30] What do you say? You want to do it? Man that sounds great. Looking forward to it. Tell us

[00:02:34] what you're about man. Tell us where you're from, what you're about and yeah let the

[00:02:38] people know about Corey Lee. Yeah yeah so originally from North Mississippi actually

[00:02:43] live there now but my wife and I we got married. We moved off, moved to Alabama then the South

[00:02:48] Mississippi, Phoenix Arizona and then back to North Mississippi and in a five-year period of

[00:02:53] time we built two physical therapy clinics, built four gyms, had three kids, sold all the

[00:02:58] businesses and kept all the kids and now I do leadership training and develop. Really love

[00:03:03] that get the opportunity to go in and work with really teams all over the country and one of my

[00:03:08] passions is to help people be good at what they do but great at who they are right like develop

[00:03:14] that inner game being bigger on the inside than on the outside. We do that through speaking,

[00:03:18] training, coaching, all that fun stuff but my story is really from here in North Mississippi.

[00:03:24] I was raised at an early age by my mom and my grandmother that's because when I was three

[00:03:29] my dad took a note taped it to the door of our single wide trailer and let my mom know

[00:03:34] that he was moving to Chicago with another lady and she got the opportunity to raise a three-year-old

[00:03:39] and a one-year-old on her own but she wasn't on her own Adam. She had my grandmother

[00:03:44] and I can still hear my grandmother's voice to this day we had been at her house and

[00:03:48] she said boys get out here and we'd get up we walked through her house Adam and in her

[00:03:54] carport she would have her car jacked up with the driver's side tire laid over and she would say

[00:03:59] pick it up put it back on and you know I'm like five trying to lift this tire I can't even lift

[00:04:03] the tire. I mean she would have us in the bathroom hovered over her toilet trying to

[00:04:08] unclog unclog toilet there was nothing wrong with the toilet right but she was living out

[00:04:13] that old John Wooden quote that says when opportunity comes it's too late to prepare and

[00:04:18] I share that because one of the things that is a value of mine is I say it is to be a seeker,

[00:04:25] a seer and seizer of opportunity right but you got to be ready when that opportunity comes

[00:04:30] and we've had a lot of transitions in our lives but each time those transitions came we

[00:04:35] were ready to to take action on that and so that's a little bit about my journey super

[00:04:40] quick aerial view been in the physical therapy world I graduated PTA school and I guess it was

[00:04:46] 2006 and even though I've transitioned out of treating I still do a lot within the industry

[00:04:52] and just obviously love what we do so yeah. Like yeah man that's awesome I love a few things

[00:04:59] that you mentioned good at what you do but great at who they are yeah isn't that awesome

[00:05:05] man? It is. There's a few other ways to say that I've heard other people say that but

[00:05:10] I've heard it said leadership is less about what you do and it's more to do with how you think

[00:05:16] right? That's good. And it's kind of the same way of similar way of saying that so

[00:05:21] tell me let's talk a little bit more about that right because I think that's an important

[00:05:26] topic because you've been coaching for a while now and so have I and so you've worked with

[00:05:34] people and what I've found is that we have way more similarities than we are than we do differences

[00:05:41] in this world right? People are people in a lot of ways but one common theme that I've seen

[00:05:49] is that people just want the what they want. They want the what yeah right they want the

[00:05:55] checklist they want the like man just give me the blueprint what else do they want there

[00:06:01] it's like give me the step-by-step instructions on how to be great right? But it's like you give

[00:06:07] them what they want it's like what you tell them what they want but then you give them

[00:06:10] what they need right? What you're saying is like it's not necessarily about what you do

[00:06:15] but it's more about who you are so how do you help people how do you help people with that?

[00:06:20] Yeah man like this is just a me thing Adam I think I truly believe that every person

[00:06:24] has been created on purpose for a purpose that people they ain't no accidents people

[00:06:29] aren't accidents mistakes or failures those are events not identity statements and so

[00:06:34] biggest things I found and I found this because it happened to me but understanding identity if

[00:06:40] we don't understand that we work for it and usually it's in comparison to other people

[00:06:45] instead of working from it and here's an example when we were starting to my wife and

[00:06:50] I we were looking at opening up our first PT clinic I can remember Adam and I did all my

[00:06:54] research I had my little notebook I had everything written down I had how many people

[00:06:58] were in our town Adam we opened up PT clinic in a town of 1100 people 1000

[00:07:07] and I knew how far the other PT clinics for all this stuff and we were ready to go and I

[00:07:12] remember I drove around and I remember driving around and I saw on the doors it has all their

[00:07:19] credentials right? Their signs it has all their credentials and I remember looking at

[00:07:24] those credentials like man that's the dog on alphabet out behind everyone their names I mean

[00:07:29] look at these guys you know like it's amazing I can't compete with them I can't compete with

[00:07:34] the alphabet you know right I was discouraged and I remember walking into the house after I did

[00:07:40] this and I told my wife say you know we just I'm just putting my stuff up we're not even

[00:07:44] going to look at it because I mean we can't compete with people who got the alphabet behind

[00:07:47] their name I'm just a PTA and you just graduated PT school like three months ago

[00:07:52] right we can't compete with these people and she so nonchalantly says something I thought was very

[00:07:57] powerful it was a powerful learning lesson for me she said but you know how to make people feel

[00:08:00] good and it was in that moment that I realized that I had fallen into this trap that I see a

[00:08:05] lot of us fall into and it's the comparison trap and see I knew a lot of those PTs and they

[00:08:10] were awesome people and they're awesome at what they do but you know what I'm awesome too

[00:08:14] that's definitely a thing right you know like in my own unique way I've got my own things

[00:08:19] that I do that bring value to people and a lot of times we get caught in this comparison trap

[00:08:26] of comparing ourselves to other people and we look at their outcome and say that should be my

[00:08:31] outcome and so I think one of the things is helping people discover identity and actually I

[00:08:36] had a mentor say one time he said Corey you know when you get to heaven God ain't gonna ask

[00:08:40] why you weren't more like Mother Teresa he's gonna say why would you why would you more like

[00:08:44] the Corey Lee I designed and created you to be and so helping discover identity and working

[00:08:50] from that instead of for that and that's sometimes a process in of itself too that's

[00:08:55] a powerful powerful piece of it you know what you're talking and you're talking some

[00:09:00] powerful powerful stuff man and to be honest it's been more recent for me personally that

[00:09:07] I've started to uncover my identity probably within the last year or two and man whenever

[00:09:14] you can step into a place of like authenticity it's like you can be like your most bold and

[00:09:18] authentic self it's like there's a lot of freedom there yeah and so much power it's like

[00:09:23] I am who I am and and it's like when you step into that place unapologetically you start

[00:09:30] to attract things to you like the people start gravitating toward you the patients start

[00:09:35] coming to you the referrals start coming in your clinic starts to grow right I'll say this on that

[00:09:41] as well I got invited to this Dave Ramsey like influencer thing right and we got to meet all

[00:09:46] their main personalities and each one of them said that same thing in their own way like I

[00:09:52] don't if you follow Dave Ramsey or anything or you see their personalities each one of them

[00:09:56] have a very unique personality and they own that and they talked about the power in that

[00:10:02] of just being you right not trying to be anybody else but he said it's going to attract

[00:10:07] certain people and certain things into your life and you're gonna be much happier too

[00:10:12] but what you said you starting to discover that I think it is a journey right like I'm

[00:10:16] still doing that too but it's a journey I heard somebody describe it as uh nope let's say

[00:10:21] what else you'll never be better at anything than you will at being yourself there you go

[00:10:28] you know what I mean and it's like oh I'm not skilled enough like okay well who are you you

[00:10:33] know what I mean like nobody's gonna be as good at being you than you and it's like as soon as

[00:10:40] you figure out what that is it's like you immediately create a niche you create an advantage

[00:10:48] you create something that nobody else has right and that's your culture that's your buzz

[00:10:53] that's your company right so one last thing on that is a realization that I came to

[00:10:59] is you know when I try to be somebody else all I can ever hope to be is a knockoff brand of the

[00:11:05] original right like if I try to be adam if I try to be just like adam I'm just a knockoff

[00:11:11] brand like I'm the equate brand is what happens like it's right everybody's an original but

[00:11:17] yeah man that's good stuff good stuff I want to talk about being prepared because you did

[00:11:23] you made a point I think to really let us know that you were prepared tell me about that like

[00:11:29] tell me about where that comes from and like how you like why being prepared is so important to

[00:11:36] you in success man it's I'm gonna try say this very quick and succinct right okay

[00:11:41] two-hour thing right but I'll wait until it's not a strategy for success right like a lot

[00:11:46] of people say I'll wait until I become a leader to start learning leadership principles

[00:11:51] I'll wait until I open up my clinic and then I'll start owning my responsibility you know

[00:11:56] what I'm saying like I'll start whenever I own my own clinic then I'll take better care all

[00:12:01] this stuff right I'll treat it like it's mine but what I have found it's a biblical

[00:12:06] principle but if I treat the small things as if it's a big thing I'll be ready for the big

[00:12:10] thing when the big thing comes and it's a powerful thing right of if I can be trusted with

[00:12:17] that small thing I can be trusted with the big thing as well so I'll wait until it's not a

[00:12:23] strategy for success and it's just honestly my grandmother I guess instilled it in us

[00:12:30] at a very very early age of being prepared when that moment comes I think I heard Andrew

[00:12:36] Carnegie talk about you know if I didn't tie them my first 100 there's no way I would have

[00:12:40] tied them my first million right like right you develop the habits now whenever that moment

[00:12:46] comes we've seen all kind of people who've won the lottery or maybe athletes who become

[00:12:51] millionaires overnight and then five years later they're dead broke because they hadn't

[00:12:56] become you develop the character and the nature in the process and everybody wants to you know

[00:13:03] they want the trophy they want the prize they they want to hold up the trophy and say man I

[00:13:07] did it but they don't love the process but it's in that process they become the type of

[00:13:12] people that when that moment comes we can stand under the weight and the responsibility that comes

[00:13:17] with that because in our listener we're talking to PT owners right you guys know there's a

[00:13:23] responsibility that comes with being an owner and a lot of times people want the perks but

[00:13:29] they don't like to pay the price yes yeah it's funny how I got a few things I want to say

[00:13:33] about that it's funny how whenever you talk to owners and they're like I want more referrals

[00:13:38] I want to open up a second location I want to open up two clinics yeah I'm like you sure you're

[00:13:44] ready for that it's like you sure you ready because that doesn't come without a price buddy

[00:13:49] that's right yeah doesn't come without a price are you ready to pay that price

[00:13:54] so we have a hopefully somebody gets value out of this but in our training with vision

[00:14:01] is a big piece of leadership right like being able to cast vision and be able to like

[00:14:06] get clear on what your vision is and a lot of people like you said get it backwards

[00:14:13] we call it be do have you have to become the person so that you can do the thing

[00:14:20] so that you can have what you want right it's like be do half you become first so you can do

[00:14:26] then you can have right and a lot of people get it backwards they think it's what have do be

[00:14:31] right it's like once I have it then I'll do the thing and then that will allow me to become

[00:14:38] the person it's like no like if you want a million dollar clinic let's start acting like

[00:14:43] a million dollar clinic yes like what does a million dollar clinic owner look like well

[00:14:49] he probably has his calendar dialed in he's probably having weekly team meetings

[00:14:53] he's probably turning his phone on silent during the day when he's with his patients

[00:14:56] he's probably working on his business and training he's probably spending time with his

[00:14:59] family taking care of his health it's like that's what it let's behave and become the person that

[00:15:04] you need to be in order to get that so I'm all about that man that's awesome like you asked

[00:15:10] the question we're gonna learn that and part of it was grandmother but also you mentioned

[00:15:16] tanny I learned a very powerful lesson from tanny right so I worked for tanny for about

[00:15:22] three years and it was a great time and it came time for my performance review all right

[00:15:28] and in my performance review the way we did it if you got a four hey that's above average three

[00:15:32] average two below average and one you probably need to find something else to do with your

[00:15:36] life right so it came time for mine and he marked me a three on everything average I said

[00:15:43] this man doesn't call me average I'm gonna show you know what I'm gonna show this man

[00:15:47] average I can't believe he called me the eight word I'm gonna turn in my six month notice

[00:15:52] and I'm Phoenix Arizona that's what I'm gonna do six month notice and that's what we did

[00:15:57] and talking to tanny now he doesn't even remember doing it he just remembers he didn't he just

[00:16:01] checked stuff but it was a powerful lesson and here's why because what it allowed me to see

[00:16:07] or see in our area of giftedness I can choose just to show up and wing it

[00:16:11] or I can work for it right and a lot of times in our area of giftedness we can because

[00:16:17] we're good at it people will still pat us on the back and say good job good job and I'm

[00:16:21] the only one that knew like I was the only one that knew that I was really just showing

[00:16:25] up I wasn't really working for it so I had to make it help me to see that if I wanted to be

[00:16:30] that million dollar clinic instead of just somebody who just shows up then I needed to

[00:16:35] start acting like it now right like was I going to be average was I going to take the talent

[00:16:40] that I have and just show up and wing it or was it going to work for it and this is really

[00:16:46] just a powerful lesson for me in continuing to be ready continuing to grow and make growth a

[00:16:52] huge value of mine that I'm going to work on that every day so when those moments do come

[00:16:58] that I can step into it but that stuff's hard Corey it is and it's not always fun that's not

[00:17:05] that stuff's hard man you're asking me I gotta do I gotta work hard I gotta do what are you

[00:17:09] talking about you know it's like yeah can I not just clock in and do my work and go home

[00:17:16] you can if you just want to stay stay where you're at so right who's it Jim Rome is it Rome or Rome

[00:17:24] oh Jim Rome yeah old school stuff man yeah he said one time I'm gonna butcher it sorry Jim

[00:17:32] something about learn to work harder on yourself than you do your job yeah and dude it's so true

[00:17:41] I can recall in the cool thing about coaching everybody has their own path of personal

[00:17:47] development people find it in coaching people find it in church people find it in family

[00:17:51] people find it in hard work right you can find it everywhere as long as you're looking for it

[00:17:56] but I found it through business and coaching and I can tell you what I had a period of

[00:18:05] about a year where I just kind of went off the grid and I just studied myself studied my

[00:18:10] behavior studied my thoughts studied the way that I was showing up the energy that I was

[00:18:16] allowing myself to have at work and why and I decided that I wanted to start thinking differently

[00:18:24] I tell you what that was the best year of time spent ever like literally after that year

[00:18:31] my business tripled my marriage went just got so much I got closer to my kids I made more

[00:18:37] money it's amazing how you are the answer you know like you really are the answer

[00:18:47] the unfortunate part about that is you're also the problem

[00:18:51] but the fun part is that you're also the answer right and that's why I love having you

[00:18:57] on our team and that's why I love this coaching program over the many years of my

[00:19:02] physical therapy clinic ownership one of my biggest fears was that one of my pts was

[00:19:06] suddenly up and quit I hated being in that position that position of fear and weakness

[00:19:11] that's why back in the day my business partner will humphries and I decided that we were going

[00:19:16] to change the narrative and always be hiring always on the lookout forget it we weren't

[00:19:21] waiting for the next provider to quit and then start up the hamster wheel to suddenly

[00:19:25] replace them as soon as possible we were going to be on the lookout always for the

[00:19:29] next rock star pt since that time I've personally witnessed will humphries build

[00:19:34] a bench of willing rock star pt candidates for our clinics such that at any time if

[00:19:39] our providers wanted to leave we had not only a suitable replacement for them but

[00:19:42] someone that we were super excited about he did this not only during some of the most

[00:19:46] difficult times to find physical therapists but also in some of the most difficult

[00:19:50] parts of the country to recruit and hire pts now will humphries has developed a program

[00:19:55] for upt owners called rock star recruiter to show you exactly how to find the next rock star

[00:20:00] physical therapists for your clinics physical therapists that don't just fog a mirror and

[00:20:04] treat patients but physical therapists that are excited to join your practice and are

[00:20:08] looking for opportunities to grow and lead in your company it's exciting to see that what will

[00:20:13] had done so masterfully in the past is now providing to owners like you across the country

[00:20:18] to help you be in a position of power versus fear of the next designation bringing on quality

[00:20:23] physical therapists via wills rock star recruiter program will open up opportunities for

[00:20:28] you in the clinic that you never would have imagined and i've seen it myself reach out to

[00:20:31] him now at will at unlock hba.com will at unlock hb as in boy a.com or call him text him directly

[00:20:43] 480-248-5119 because it's all about helping you realize you are the answer you know what

[00:20:57] i mean and as soon as you can realize that as soon as you have that switch that goes off

[00:21:00] oh actually i can do whatever i want and i can create whatever i want and there are no limitations

[00:21:05] and there's nothing but endless possibilities it's like that's whenever things start turning

[00:21:10] around that's whenever your clinic grows that's whenever you start attracting candidates to your

[00:21:14] place right absolutely man yeah good stuff man love that you also mentioned earlier

[00:21:22] you know how to make people feel good is that something that you learned over time or is

[00:21:27] that something you were kind of naturally born with like how did you learn that skill

[00:21:30] yeah you know i've actually had a couple other people ask me something like that i don't know if

[00:21:35] it's a natural thing or what but it's genuinely being interested in other people like i think you

[00:21:42] have to have to have that especially in our world the pt world you got to truly care about

[00:21:48] people people can tell if you're just tolerating them and if you're just putting up with them or

[00:21:53] if you actually care about them and so i ask a lot of questions like if you and i were chilling

[00:21:58] out the coffee shop i would probably ask you a lot of questions because i'm genuinely interested

[00:22:03] in your story i really am i'm not trying to sell you anything i'm not trying to figure you

[00:22:08] whatever i'm just genuinely interested in you and so i don't know if that's something i've

[00:22:14] always had or just maybe even learned but also i guess i have learned some of it we

[00:22:20] talk about what's people's favorite topic themselves yeah we talk about what's people's

[00:22:27] favorite word their name right and so knowing that too i mean it plays into that but i

[00:22:33] genuinely interested in other people i'm gonna share a super quick story we have this guy

[00:22:37] that goes into this we had this guy come into our pt clinic one day and adam this dude was

[00:22:42] rough looking right like he big tall lanky white dude had long scraggly hair looked like

[00:22:47] it hadn't had a bath in eight months and he was hard he was hard right had tattoos all over his

[00:22:51] face i'm not saying anything about tattoos or anything but had a little teardrop tattoo

[00:22:56] had a long fingernail you know dude comes in look this dude comes in with a gun

[00:23:03] on his right hip oh buddy big bowie knife on the left hip and a badge around his neck

[00:23:08] talking about how he can carry these things and he would come in like why i gotta do

[00:23:13] 10 minutes on the bike why i gotta do 30 of this right like it's like man i'm gonna find something

[00:23:18] on this guy and so like i was generally really wanted to connect with him and so i just asking

[00:23:23] questions i'd asking questions and eventually i find out he spent time in phoenix arizona i

[00:23:30] said i got him now i got him now and i was like and so oh wow man we lived in phoenix

[00:23:35] too it's like what did you like to do and well i like to hike dude i did too where'd

[00:23:40] you hike at well i like camelback what we live right by a camelback right and i just went down

[00:23:45] that there's a communication principle called the 101 principle and what the 101 principle says is

[00:23:50] find the one thing we have in common and give it 100 of our attention until we develop common

[00:23:56] ground and so i intuitively realized that principle and i really and i learned it

[00:24:02] it's a principle the 101 principle find the one thing we have in common give it 100 of

[00:24:06] our attention until we develop common ground that's what i did with that guy found the one

[00:24:10] thing we had in common which was phoenix arizona and i just hammered it out until we developed

[00:24:15] common ground and then you know what once we developed common ground man we were able to talk

[00:24:20] about other things and i found that actually has some other things in common with him

[00:24:25] now there were a lot of things i didn't have in common with but his whole attitude change

[00:24:29] you can see the walls come down he shifted from well i gotta do this to hey mr corey i'm

[00:24:34] done with the bite what i got next like dude when i was calling me mr corey you know and

[00:24:39] taking a genuine interest in other people i think is part of that yeah you're a smart guy man

[00:24:47] i don't know about that i just go with it well the reason why i brought that up

[00:24:52] is because listen everybody has their own ideas on how to grow a company grow a business

[00:25:02] i see i mean there are people at it in this world that are way better at me than it than i am

[00:25:08] but i'm pretty dang good at it too yeah and what i can tell you is that people don't remember

[00:25:14] what you do for them they remember how you make them feel period write that down put it on the

[00:25:19] sticky note right people don't remember what you do for them they don't care about your

[00:25:24] clinical skills they don't care about your manual therapy skills they don't care about

[00:25:26] how many degrees of knee flexion you got them they don't care all they care about is how you

[00:25:31] make them feel right so like if me and corey are competing physical therapists and we're across

[00:25:36] town and corey this clinical expert with all the alphabet behind his name right but he's

[00:25:43] got the personality of a cat's ass sorry i can say ass on this but let's say you get him 130

[00:25:51] degrees of knee flexion but he comes to me maybe not as many credentials but maybe i

[00:25:57] implement the 101 principle find common ground with them i help him feel good and maybe i only

[00:26:02] get him 120 degrees who do you think he's coming to see next time going to my man

[00:26:07] at that's right every time every time so the degree in which you can help people like you

[00:26:15] is an important characteristic of an owner it's an important characteristic right you mentioned

[00:26:21] dale carnegie and i'm assuming i know you've read the book how to win friends and influence

[00:26:25] people yeah the guy built an empire on this principle how to win friends and influence

[00:26:32] people how to get people to like you that's how he built his whole company right the other

[00:26:38] book that comes to mind is crucial conversations have you read that one i've got that in my list

[00:26:45] on audible but i have not read that one yet i'm gonna be honest i forgot who wrote it

[00:26:49] but it's a great book about crucial conversations risky conversations conversations that aren't so

[00:26:56] comfortable all the time and one of the first principles in that book is develop an area of

[00:27:01] common ground right so as soon as you can create what you don't want to do in those

[00:27:07] situations is make it a me versus you right what you want to do is find an area of common ground

[00:27:14] that aligns with both of our goals and then fight towards that then becomes more about teamwork

[00:27:19] and collaboration and less about conflict right yeah i like what you said too about getting

[00:27:26] people to like you and those kind of things sometimes people are like well i don't really

[00:27:30] need people or anything like that but the reality is you do need people and people will

[00:27:35] not go along with you if they cannot get along with you people won't go along with me if they

[00:27:39] cannot get along with me right and so it's such a powerful principle well you know you can

[00:27:45] exchange the word like and just put the word trust there you go yeah if you don't like the

[00:27:50] word like put the word trust you know maybe i don't like you but i trust you you know what

[00:27:55] i mean yeah man i'm enjoying the conversation yeah that's good i've got another question for

[00:28:01] let's go and this is kind of an open-ended question just to kind of see where it goes

[00:28:05] but you've worked with practice owners business owners all across different industries

[00:28:12] and for those who are listening i'm just going to let everybody know that no matter what

[00:28:17] industry you're in business is business and it comes with very similar challenges across

[00:28:21] all the industries whether you're a plumber or a contractor or a coach or whatever you do

[00:28:27] it's all the same stuff so what i want to know from you corey and i think we covered a lot of

[00:28:32] it we may have missed a few things but my question for you is what are some of the

[00:28:37] mindset hurdles that you see most often in business owners comma what are some of the

[00:28:46] challenges that you really really enjoy helping owners overcome yeah that's good man honestly

[00:28:53] as i've reflected on my own journey and working with leaders in all these industries i found

[00:28:59] they're actually a common i've distilled them down to about five or six common barriers right

[00:29:03] it's five or six common ones right and so one of everybody get your pencils out yeah yeah yeah

[00:29:08] the one is that comparison trap that we talked about but not only do we compare ourselves

[00:29:13] to other people but here's the bigger piece of that is we compare our potential to our

[00:29:17] current results we compare what we're capable of to what we currently achieved and so what

[00:29:22] happens is like we'll take a look at this let's say i got this big idea flashing into my mind so

[00:29:27] maybe i've got one clinic i've got this maybe this idea to oh how do i get the five right

[00:29:33] when i look at my current results and say oh that's big i'm a loser yeah i'm a loser

[00:29:39] right like that's too big i can't do i've never done anything like that before and

[00:29:44] what i like to do is like if you're in your room like take a look around your room like

[00:29:49] would you say your room's big or small if you're driving in a car is your car big or small

[00:29:53] and then the reality is compared to what right right is my room here compared to my bathroom is

[00:29:59] kind of big compared to maybe the arena downtown this is kind of small the room didn't change

[00:30:04] but what i compared it to did change and so the same thing with this big idea it's not

[00:30:09] big or small it just is and hopefully it is bigger than my current results but what we tend

[00:30:14] to do is we compare our potential or we compare what we're capable of to what we've currently

[00:30:20] achieved and so that is a barrier as well and so what i like to say is like this inspired idea

[00:30:27] like anything's possible anything is possible if you doubt that just go outside at night

[00:30:33] and look up at the moon and realize that there are footprints on the moon right like

[00:30:37] well i even got it right there behind me unless i don't know what they teaching these kids in

[00:30:41] school today my daughter came in and says she thinks that was a hoax but

[00:30:46] earth is flat what are you talking about yeah i know right but that comparison trap not only

[00:30:50] comparing to other people but comparing to our current results and so anything is possible

[00:30:54] that's why i'm a huge believer i am a coach right but also receive coaching that's power

[00:30:59] in having somebody come alongside of you that not only embraces who you are but believes

[00:31:04] in who you can become right and sometimes you just need somebody who's not attached to the work

[00:31:08] to see it from the outside from a different perspective come alongside of you help you

[00:31:12] figure out some path to get there like i believe if you have one you can get to five but there's

[00:31:17] a journey to get there right and so that's one of them and it's less of a strategy and more of

[00:31:22] a personal journey yeah more of a personal journey right once you become then you get it

[00:31:29] yeah love it it's good i'll just say one or two more but another one is you even mentioned

[00:31:36] it just a second ago imagination incorrect use of imagination so one of my favorite books is

[00:31:41] called think and grow rich by napoleon hill you ever read that yeah i've read a little bit of it

[00:31:46] i always tell people read the first six chapters and then it gets kind of muddy

[00:31:49] yeah i read about half of it okay gotcha gotcha well in that book what he does he spends 20

[00:31:55] years studying the lives of 25 000 people 500 the wealthiest most successful people in the

[00:31:59] world at that time but anyway in one of the chapters on imagination he said man's only

[00:32:05] limitation within reason lies in the development and the use of their imagination i thought about

[00:32:12] that right like development and use so here's the thing is we all have an imagination and we

[00:32:18] all use our imagination i can use my imagination to come up with all the reasons why something's

[00:32:26] going to fail i can use my imagination say all the reasons why something's not working out

[00:32:31] or why it won't work out or i can use my imaginations to put how in front of the can i

[00:32:37] how can and so when i lay in bed at night and i'm worrying i'm actually using my imagination

[00:32:44] he says man's only limitation within reason lies in the development and the use

[00:32:49] of their imagination and so one of the barriers i see is incorrect use we spend more time

[00:32:55] focusing on all the negative aspects of imagination rather than taking it into the

[00:33:01] workshop of the mind and say if this is possible how would it be possible if i can how can i and

[00:33:08] so that does another one so yeah awesome awesome the comparison trap have you read

[00:33:14] dan sullivan's stuff at all what is that who not how he wrote who not how he also read

[00:33:20] a book called the gap in the game i haven't read that one you ought to check that out

[00:33:24] it's a really good book and in that book he talks about the comparison trap and he talks about

[00:33:32] it's funny how dan sullivan i mean the guy's a genius millionaire coach and he's still talking

[00:33:38] about mindset stuff right but he talks about the mistake that people make is comparing

[00:33:43] themselves to where they want to be and it's there's always a gap there and so you're

[00:33:48] comparing yourself to that gap instead of comparing yourself to where you've come

[00:33:52] which there's a gain there so like that's why it's always so important to debrief

[00:33:57] your experience and look back and debrief your experience so that way you can learn and realize

[00:34:02] what are your wins what's why we always start with our wins right so you are making progress

[00:34:06] maybe it doesn't feel like progress because you're comparing yourself to where you want to

[00:34:09] be but you are making progress it's important to remember that the imagination principle is big

[00:34:16] I like to say you get what you're looking for

[00:34:21] you're gonna find what you're looking for if you're looking for limitation

[00:34:25] if you're looking for excuse if you're looking for fear you're going to find it but if you're

[00:34:32] looking for possibility if you're looking for abundance right you're going to find that too

[00:34:37] right so choose wisely because it's important and the question i love to ask myself is

[00:34:43] is what needs to be true in order for us to achieve this.

[00:34:48] And most of the time, when you ask yourself that question,

[00:34:52] you really give yourself like,

[00:34:53] you're really brave enough to ask yourself that question.

[00:34:57] Then you'll realize the answers to those questions are so simple.

[00:35:01] Okay.

[00:35:01] That's like this whole time you haven't made action on XYZ

[00:35:06] because you're worried about something that doesn't even matter

[00:35:09] or that's not even true.

[00:35:11] Right?

[00:35:12] And whenever you can let those things go,

[00:35:14] you start operating from more of a place of abundance and possibility.

[00:35:17] And next thing you know, you got a clinic full of patients.

[00:35:20] That's it, right?

[00:35:23] Yeah.

[00:35:23] Cool man.

[00:35:24] Cool.

[00:35:25] Well, uh, Cory, an untraditional podcast,

[00:35:46] to help actually find more of what's most important to them in their business

[00:35:50] and in their life.

[00:35:50] Right?

[00:35:52] So how do people get in touch with you if they have questions?

[00:35:55] Like where would somebody go to find you?
