[00:00:05] Welcome to The Aaron LeBauer Show. This is the number one show for passionate

[00:00:09] physical therapy and healthcare entrepreneurs looking to level up their

[00:00:13] income and impact on the world. If that's you, then you're in the right place. So

[00:00:18] sit back, chill out, and let's get into the show. Hey what's up? This is Aaron with

[00:00:28] The Aaron LeBauer Show. So today we're gonna talk about the traits that

[00:00:32] determine success. So I got a voice message from Derek Nielsen this morning

[00:00:39] and Derek was basically like, Aaron you know you've probably been asked this

[00:00:43] maybe you know I don't know like what are the traits that determine people's

[00:00:46] success in business? It's like the idea that it spurred for me. It's like oh let

[00:00:50] me just blast these things out on a piece of paper and record a podcast. But

[00:00:55] my first instinct was like hey I've already I've already talked about this

[00:00:58] and I probably have and I'm sure I think I sent Derek a link to the final talk

[00:01:04] from PT BizCon a little over a year ago where I talk about this. But I've got

[00:01:09] these down in maybe a couple different sections and that's what I want to share

[00:01:12] with you today. Are the traits that determine success? Because it's you know

[00:01:16] is it constantly in flux or constantly in conversation? Because I was just

[00:01:19] talking about some of this last night with my good friend Greg Pennington. So

[00:01:23] here's Derek. Now I'll tell you who Derek is. Derek is a physical therapist. He was

[00:01:30] the Cash PT resident. The first one back in I think it was 20 I want to say

[00:01:34] 2016 or maybe it was 2017. But Derek contacted me and I've interviewed him a

[00:01:41] couple times on the show and I'll be interviewing him again coming up in the

[00:01:45] next month or two about some things that we're doing together now. But Derek was

[00:01:50] the first Cash PT resident. He went and started his own business a cash

[00:01:54] practice in Durham North Carolina. He didn't know anyone and he made just

[00:01:58] under six figures in his first year. I think that was I think that year was 2017

[00:02:02] and you know why did he make just under six figures? Because I had recently

[00:02:07] raised my rates when we hired Tyler the second Cash PT resident and I raised my

[00:02:12] rates because I realized I wasn't gonna be able to pay a full-time physical

[00:02:15] therapist for what we were charging because we were undercharging. So yeah

[00:02:19] that might have been 2016 when Derek worked with me. And then but so Derek

[00:02:24] didn't raise his rates. I was like dude but we did it just at the end and I did

[00:02:28] it as Tyler came in and Tyler's like yeah let's do it. By the way I've

[00:02:31] interviewed Tyler too so they're they're back a couple years.

[00:02:35] Tyler also has successful practice in Winston-Salem North Carolina. And then

[00:02:41] and then so Derek went and did that and for five years he had successful cash

[00:02:45] practice doing 20 and 30k months but what Derek realized was that he he was

[00:02:52] he loved while he loved it he was more passionate about marketing and sales and

[00:02:57] building out funnels and running ads and seeing how he could get people to

[00:03:02] fill his business through Facebook ads and webinars etc. And one of those things

[00:03:09] that Derek did he's like well one Durham's a small town but two I don't

[00:03:13] like going out and doing marketing events. I don't like going out and doing

[00:03:16] workshops. He's like I'm more of an introvert and so he went and studied

[00:03:20] with you know Frank Kern stuff and a bunch of other people's stuff and like

[00:03:23] how can he make these videos and he started doing webinars because I had

[00:03:27] been doing webinars. I told him how to do webinars. He's like I'm gonna do a

[00:03:29] webinar for the clinic and he built one for our clinic but really used that to

[00:03:33] build one for his clinic and then went and perfected it and was doing 20 and 30

[00:03:37] 20 25 30k months running ads to webinars to fill to fill his schedule.

[00:03:44] Which is really dope which is very different than kind of what I did and

[00:03:48] when a lot of other people have done. And along the way he had other people

[00:03:53] asking for help and then he started helping other people and realized that

[00:03:56] the bottleneck was sales and so he's working on sales. And then so Derek's

[00:04:00] been doing that so he he's no longer treating in practice but he's been

[00:04:03] running a business helping other PTs at like a high-touch level build this out.

[00:04:10] And now Derek and I are working on building out his like agencies. He's

[00:04:19] the new HPT. It's called the PT marketing machine and we're referring

[00:04:23] our clients to him for help with their marketing, their sales, their funnels etc.

[00:04:27] And so Derek and I have been you know in contact over the last few few weeks

[00:04:33] working together building this out strategizing etc. chatting and you know

[00:04:38] look Derek and I are good friends and so he sent me a message this morning. I was

[00:04:43] just like hey Aaron you know just as he's trying to think through the process

[00:04:48] and the copywriting and these things is like what are the traits that determine

[00:04:51] success. And so I didn't want to just keep this answer just for Derek I wanted

[00:04:54] to share it with you guys. So there's a couple of things in there that are

[00:04:57] coming you know Derek and I you know we haven't worked together for a few years

[00:05:00] but now we're working together again which is awesome as a way to help our

[00:05:04] clients build out not only the marketing but one of the things Derek's

[00:05:10] building and come up with is creating this like clinic scorecard where you're

[00:05:16] gonna be able to see all your clinic metrics really easily and no one's gonna

[00:05:21] have to go track them down. It's gonna get all compiled for you based on a few

[00:05:25] parameters that we set up and really show you the bottleneck because that was

[00:05:29] the I'm getting back off track but that was the thing that he saw is like hey

[00:05:33] anyone can run you Facebook ads and bring you leads but can you do the

[00:05:37] sales and everyone says oh put the person in front of me I can sell them but

[00:05:42] that's not really the case and so to really grow a business we have to

[00:05:46] understand where the bottleneck is and numbers are what really tell us where

[00:05:49] the bottlenecks are and so if you don't know your numbers you don't know your

[00:05:53] bottleneck. You can feel where the bottleneck is and think you know where

[00:05:56] it is but you're not 100% certain and that's one thing I have to get better

[00:05:59] with myself. So anyways that's really cool coming down the road and you'll

[00:06:04] hear more about that later. Today I do want to talk about the traits that

[00:06:07] determine success and if you're listening and you're not driving and you

[00:06:12] want to just jot down what do you think the traits that determine success are do

[00:06:15] it now while I'm rambling and see if your ideas match up with mine or maybe

[00:06:19] you're like well I don't know do I have them or how do I get them and I'm gonna

[00:06:24] share a little bit about that with you on this episode. Here's the traits that

[00:06:27] determine success for physical therapy business owners or really like any

[00:06:32] business owner. Number one I think I've talked about this a little bit before

[00:06:38] you must be quick to ask for help so successful business owners ask for help

[00:06:44] but don't go asking for help from your family and friends who don't own

[00:06:48] businesses. Ask for help from your family and friends who own businesses

[00:06:52] and also ask for help from mentors coaches be willing to go out and hire a

[00:06:56] coach hire a mentor pay I'm trying not to do a lot of don'ts in this episode

[00:07:02] but you know don't go ask someone can I pick your brain take him out to lunch

[00:07:06] and be like hey I'd love to get to know you and then ask him some questions but

[00:07:10] just take from people give but but at the same time you have to be willing to

[00:07:15] ask for help I was sitting down talking to my one of my good friends last night

[00:07:19] struggling with a big business issue and he's really starting to you know finally

[00:07:24] like share and talk about it but he hasn't talked about it up until about

[00:07:29] three or four weeks ago because one it involves litigation and lawyers and a

[00:07:33] lot of money and and two he was like you know I was ashamed and embarrassed that

[00:07:37] I had made a mistake and I couldn't see see the problem and you know like I was

[00:07:42] like yeah man I've been there you know like we've all been there he's like it

[00:07:45] just feels good to talk about it and you're saying yeah you just got to go

[00:07:48] ask for help we got to talk about these things with I mean with the right people

[00:07:52] but and then when it comes to coaching as coaching client the three things I

[00:07:57] expect our our platinum mastermind members to do is ask for help because as

[00:08:02] your coach I cannot help you unless I know there's a problem hey is your

[00:08:06] father as your husband is your spouse your partner I can't help you with a

[00:08:10] problem unless I know that there is a problem like I Aaron doesn't read minds

[00:08:15] I don't know about a lot of you guys but I don't read minds I I take things for

[00:08:20] face value and if you don't let me know what's wrong that you're struggling with

[00:08:25] a problem that you have a question or something like I can't help you and

[00:08:29] maybe you'll get help along the way but only when someone else asks that

[00:08:33] question but if you ask that question now you reach out to a Facebook group of

[00:08:37] a friend a mentor where hey I need some help like dude you're actually gonna get

[00:08:42] some help or you can struggle in silence so you must be quick to ask for help

[00:08:47] and then you must be quick to take action and implement what you learn

[00:08:51] success loves speed money loves speed you know you have to take action and

[00:08:56] look sometimes taking action means that you're gonna make a mistake and that's

[00:09:01] okay but you have to be willing to take fast action imperfect action it's not

[00:09:05] just even imperfect action or 80% is good enough Colin Powell at one point

[00:09:09] said I think and I I'm quoting someone else who quoted him but it's basically

[00:09:13] like I only need 40% of the information to be able to make a decision you know

[00:09:17] about going to war in Iraq you know I think that was back in the 90s like

[00:09:22] right he didn't he doesn't need all the information didn't even need half the

[00:09:24] information you just need 40% of the information and I could be misquoting

[00:09:28] him and I probably am but go google it you know prove me wrong that's cool I

[00:09:33] misquote things all the time but the point is the important part that once

[00:09:38] you ask for help and you get some information or once you see like don't

[00:09:42] sit on the fence take action implement what you learn because the people that

[00:09:47] go and do are the ones that hit success fast and you're gonna hit the lessons

[00:09:52] fast too the faster you act the faster the results will come and along the way

[00:09:58] you're gonna learn the lesson so that's the third one is be quick to share you

[00:10:02] must be quick to share your wins and lessons quick to share your experiences

[00:10:06] with the people that ask for help or even you know don't just go give

[00:10:09] unsolicited help but look you wouldn't be here I wouldn't be here if I didn't

[00:10:13] share what I knew if I didn't share what I know I didn't share my experiences

[00:10:17] there would be a there wouldn't be a cash PT anything you know there'd I

[00:10:23] mean there'd be a hashtag on Instagram I'm not Instagram Twitter but who goes

[00:10:28] to Twitter anymore there if I wasn't sharing what I knew which I took a

[00:10:32] massage therapy practice model and started a physical therapy practice

[00:10:36] model with it and if I didn't share those things that I learned as a massage

[00:10:39] therapist for eight years or ten years before I became a PT if I didn't learn

[00:10:44] if I didn't share the business lessons I learned in massage therapy school maybe

[00:10:47] someone would come along and do it but at the time when I started my practice

[00:10:50] there were yeah there were other physical therapists doing a cash

[00:10:54] practice but they certainly weren't sharing it and helping other people do

[00:10:57] the same you know there was one other person came along around the same time

[00:11:02] and that was Jared Carter so shout out to Jared and Jared was doing it but you

[00:11:07] know like we kind of come back and forth you know help we're helping each other

[00:11:11] and helping other people you know unselfishly giving and sharing you know

[00:11:16] but there was no one when I started my practice there was no one out there

[00:11:19] mentoring other people and starting a cash practice they all wanted to keep it

[00:11:23] to themselves a lot of people still want to keep it to themselves it doesn't

[00:11:27] matter if it's cash practice or how to run a workshop or how to fix ACL you

[00:11:33] know how to repair ACL and I repair the ACL you know do the rehab like go share

[00:11:39] the secrets and as you're sharing in your marketing you need to share more

[00:11:42] about the what and that and the why versus the exact steps how but share

[00:11:48] your wins and lessons so our mastermind members when we start on board a new

[00:11:52] member yesterday and there's three questions I ask because these are the

[00:11:55] three big ones is do you promise to be quick to ask for help when you need it

[00:12:01] yes okay do you promise to be quick to take action and implement what you learn

[00:12:04] yes do you promise you quick to share your wins and lessons yes you agree to

[00:12:09] those three things you're gonna be successful if you can do that great and

[00:12:12] another thing about sharing is I want to I want you to share feedback with me

[00:12:16] what worked what didn't what do you like what don't you like what can I improve

[00:12:19] what can you improve you know share your testimonials share your results

[00:12:24] with me all those things like if you can do those things like boom you just

[00:12:28] move so much faster okay next be willing to make mistakes I kind of touched on

[00:12:33] this but you have in order to be able to feel like you can take action quickly

[00:12:36] you have to be okay with the mistakes you have to be willing to make mistakes

[00:12:40] you have to be willing to hear the word no hearing the word no is sometimes hard

[00:12:43] saying no is hard like I don't want to say no to my daughter but the other day

[00:12:47] she said dad just tell me no like no I was like but I don't want to say no

[00:12:52] because I don't want it like she asked me a lot of questions a lot of times and

[00:12:55] a lot of her nose because she's trying to push the boundaries and seeing what

[00:12:58] she can and can't do I'm just like but I don't want to tell you no she's like

[00:13:01] just tell me no I'm like you're right even in your marketing it's like go out

[00:13:05] don't worry about you know if I go out and talk to ten people will they reject

[00:13:10] me worry about can I get a hundred nose this week because if you get a hundred

[00:13:13] nose you're gonna get a bunch of yeses along the way you're just gonna hear no

[00:13:17] more but no is clear communication being reject being rejected and nose are

[00:13:23] different but you know you go out and work with someone and if they don't want

[00:13:25] to work with you then they're not your people and you have to be willing to

[00:13:30] make mistakes the only way to take quick action is to know that I am gonna make a

[00:13:35] mistake and you know what I'm gonna learn from it and I've made a lot of

[00:13:38] mistakes so most I share some I can't or shouldn't you know like business personal

[00:13:45] etc whether they're appropriate or they divulge someone else's secrets like more

[00:13:50] private information like how I will share as much as I can but what I can

[00:13:55] say is that a mistake isn't a mistake if you learn a lesson from it when you're

[00:14:01] thinking about like errors you've made in the past even talking to my my buddy

[00:14:06] Greg last night and you know talking to Derek talking to mastermind members who

[00:14:13] are at the at the event last week you know talking to got everyone it's like

[00:14:20] what are the mistakes that we make right and what are the lessons we learn from

[00:14:24] them and this is something that Nick Essin players you know worked with me

[00:14:28] for over three years and you know if he was one of the first to really get it

[00:14:32] when I started teaching this was like sometimes we win and sometimes we learn

[00:14:36] and it's like you don't lose if you're taking the lesson from it right so if

[00:14:42] you're gonna take the lesson like what's the lesson how to make my business

[00:14:46] better versus going out and be like hey I tried these strategies and they didn't

[00:14:49] work for me and so this doesn't work you know it's the same as someone saying

[00:14:54] physical therapy doesn't work you're like but you never tried my brand of

[00:14:57] physical therapy like it's it's it's not a finite concrete thing you know

[00:15:04] mistakes are there for you not not to you like we were also talking about like

[00:15:10] Craig Ballantine and Bedros who were my coaches for a while talk about one of

[00:15:15] their friends Sean Stevenson he's the three-foot giant I can't remember what

[00:15:19] the disease he had but it was the disease where it makes your your bones

[00:15:22] very brittle I think you know it's a gene anomaly where maybe it's a lack of

[00:15:27] calcium uptake or something like that I can't remember exactly what was but you

[00:15:31] know he's had like hundreds of fractures in his life and he became a motivational

[00:15:35] speaker and he would get up there and say you know he's in a wheelchair he's

[00:15:37] you know three and a half feet tall he's every time he's falling as a kid

[00:15:41] he's fractured bones and they've had to repair and repair in different ways and

[00:15:44] it just doesn't repair right and it's just you know but he's a motivational

[00:15:48] speaker has helped millions of people you know live more empowered lives and he

[00:15:52] would share that this happened for me not to me it happened for me so that I

[00:15:58] can learn the lesson and pass it on to other people and inspire other people

[00:16:00] and you know if we take that frame that the mistakes are happening for you these

[00:16:06] hard things these you know the traumas the the you know like what's it called

[00:16:16] you know when people are like mean to you you know like we're like you feel

[00:16:22] like it's your fault that you put yourself in a situation but just because

[00:16:25] you put yourself in a situation doesn't mean that you're responsible for the

[00:16:29] other person's behavior right like you're not responsible for the other

[00:16:32] person's behavior you're responsible for your behavior and the way you react but

[00:16:36] if something bad comes out of it it's like okay like that happened to me and

[00:16:40] I can be a victim and say hey I've got fibromyalgia and I'm never gonna heal

[00:16:44] and you can adopt a victim mindset and you might be a victim on paper but in

[00:16:49] in how you act does it does it have to be that way forever once you you know

[00:16:54] get past it maybe some people get stuck there but can you go into these things

[00:16:58] especially in business not in like personal relationships but business can

[00:17:02] be traumatic too can you go into it with this idea that these things are

[00:17:06] happening to me so I can learn a lesson and make it better and help even more

[00:17:09] people well then when those things happen they become funny and you're like

[00:17:15] gosh you know this wasn't the problem I came to work to solve today but well let

[00:17:20] me get through this let me figure out how this is gonna make my business

[00:17:23] better and some of those things have happened to me lately and I see like

[00:17:26] yeah it's happening it's just another piece in the step of the puzzle that's

[00:17:31] gonna make Aaron the 52 year old and the 55 year old even stronger more

[00:17:34] resilient and more successful so be willing to make mistakes because when

[00:17:40] you go when you're willing to learn from them they're the things are gonna make

[00:17:44] you great okay here's a couple I mean those are four I could probably end the

[00:17:48] episode right there but there's some other things these other traits that

[00:17:53] determine success that I've noticed over the last few years people who take

[00:17:57] personal responsibilities for their actions and taking personal

[00:18:00] responsibility it means not expecting someone else to do the work not

[00:18:05] expecting someone else to save you and then owning up to your mistakes when you

[00:18:09] make them but not really but not the same mistake like owning up to your

[00:18:13] transgressions against other people like apologizing and apologizing without

[00:18:17] condition like just saying hey I'm sorry I'm I'm sorry I made a mistake and or I

[00:18:24] made a you know I'm sorry I said that I did that and just leaving it is that

[00:18:29] without saying I'm sorry I did that but X Y & Z happened so it justified it like

[00:18:34] you don't don't make an apology with a justification as soon as you justify

[00:18:37] your actions that nullifies the apology you take personal responsibility in that

[00:18:42] way take personal responsibility for your business success and your business

[00:18:46] struggles you know like I'm my own bottleneck like it's my responsibility

[00:18:52] yes there's outside factors in the world that are influencing things but it's up

[00:18:57] to me to do this right and I want to do it with help I am doing it with help but

[00:19:03] that's it like take personal responsibility

[00:19:06] I've also noticed this I was telling someone yesterday I mean I've noticed

[00:19:11] this for the last few months like oh we were talking on it I did a recording of

[00:19:15] an interview with Michael Murphy who's one of our successful Platinum Mastermind

[00:19:20] graduates and you know he was saying that he played collegiate soccer and I'm

[00:19:25] like I didn't even like I worked with him for over a year and didn't even know

[00:19:29] that and I was like wow like a lot of the people that come through our

[00:19:32] programs who are the most successful members have played like a collegiate

[00:19:37] sport a professional sport you know even if you weren't top amateur did you treat

[00:19:41] it like that the idea is you've already put in hours of training you've done

[00:19:45] training when you didn't want to you've gone to work when you didn't want to for

[00:19:51] a bigger goal right so people who've already done that go come into business

[00:19:57] and go I've already done the hard shit I've already eaten shit for years to get

[00:20:01] a result that I wanted I know it's a long game not a short game you don't

[00:20:05] you don't deadlift 405 pounds you know just by starting deadlift and only

[00:20:10] deadlifting for six weeks maybe there's one or two people out there that'll do

[00:20:14] that because they've been lifting boulders I don't know or they're just

[00:20:18] massive with they're massively strong with short legs and femurs right people

[00:20:24] who have been in athletics sports there's you know I'm sure there's other

[00:20:29] activities but soccer running football cycling cheerleading baseball have come

[00:20:35] through our programs and they're crushing it if you haven't had that

[00:20:39] here's what I would challenge you is pick a big goal that's not in business

[00:20:44] and go after it and do not stop until you hit it like whether that's running a

[00:20:49] marathon you know racing a triathlon something you know it's it doing 75 hard

[00:20:56] like I won't do 75 hard because I already did like eight years hard racing

[00:21:01] but you know racing bikes eight years ten years I may race bikes from the time

[00:21:04] I was 18 to 34 and I've done some racing since go do something set yourself a

[00:21:11] big challenge with it not just a six-week challenge set yourself

[00:21:14] something that you know it's gonna take two to three years to accomplish like

[00:21:17] snatching a 24 kilogram kettlebell overhead a hundred times in five minutes

[00:21:21] I've been working on that one for six years and not there yet but I'm gonna

[00:21:26] get there this year okay next you love the work you love the problem solving

[00:21:31] you're not just here for the for the result I'm not just here to make money

[00:21:36] because this is a good idea to make money because I see other people doing

[00:21:39] it it's like I'm here because I love doing the work I love solving the

[00:21:43] problems I just want to I just want to solve the shitty stupid problems that

[00:21:48] prove I made a mistake or the problems that are out of my control I want to

[00:21:52] solve big problems to help people but you love the work I love it like if I

[00:21:57] didn't have problems to solve this would suck I love coming into work making my

[00:22:02] coffee it really really love I love helping my clients I love seeing whether

[00:22:06] it's a patient or a coaching client I love seeing that switch in their eye

[00:22:10] their expression when they've had this aha moment and things are better now like

[00:22:14] I love that part of the work and that's why I'm gonna keep doing this no matter

[00:22:18] what else happens I love this part of the work I love it I love problem I love

[00:22:23] building new things I love creating new things and I love helping people so you

[00:22:28] have to love the work it's not just about the destination it's the journey I just

[00:22:32] did a podcast on that next you have to be driven you have to be driven you have

[00:22:36] to be internally driven you have to be internally driven to help others not

[00:22:41] just to succeed yourself you will succeed yourself when you help others and you

[00:22:45] solve a big problem for other people they will pay you big money or a little

[00:22:52] bit of money in droves and you'll be successful but you have to be driven to

[00:22:57] this it's almost like there's a machine in you or not you have to like this is

[00:23:02] the commonality there's a machine in you that just keeps you going and going no

[00:23:05] matter what obstacle gets in your way what how many people tell you there's

[00:23:10] ideas stupid or it's never gonna work you have to be driven like there's a

[00:23:15] motor there's a thing in you and it's not just because you took your ADHD

[00:23:20] medication that you have a motor that medication helps the motor focus on the

[00:23:24] destination and get things done where's funny at our retreat we had it there

[00:23:29] was like three there's three of us I won't name their names but we're

[00:23:32] chatting at our Thursday night thing and we're talking about it and it was like

[00:23:36] all of a sudden I could tell like the three of us all had the same experience

[00:23:38] and the other people in the conversation were like mmm it's not ADHD that makes

[00:23:43] you a successful entrepreneur it's just a cause that is a commonality but it

[00:23:46] didn't even make my list because it's not it's not like the determinant but it

[00:23:53] was funny because and I'm getting off track but we all had like I was like

[00:23:58] yeah this that and it helps do that you know it's not a solution but it's a it

[00:24:02] was funny because we all kind of like got it and the other people staying there

[00:24:05] were like don't really get it and don't have it but everyone in that room is

[00:24:11] driven driven for a purpose to help patients lives be better and to help

[00:24:16] themselves and their families and to get this freedom that were promised but to

[00:24:22] get the freedom you're promised you can't sit and wait you have to go after

[00:24:25] it okay that leads me the next one just you're focusing on helping others before

[00:24:30] helping yourself you know it's like it's not that I mean like in the morning even

[00:24:35] I'll feed myself before I feed the kids well not lately but when they were

[00:24:39] younger it was like if I can't operate I can't help the kids right my primary

[00:24:45] goal isn't about me it's about other people you know I drive satisfaction and

[00:24:50] helping other people you know I've seen other people succeed makes me happy and

[00:24:56] allows me to succeed succeed in business and succeed in their fitness and their

[00:25:00] body you know to me it's it's helping others it's the outcome that my clients

[00:25:05] get it's the quote from my dad he says I've mentioned this a lot it's like when

[00:25:11] you do right by your patients you know the money will follow the money you need

[00:25:15] will follow as long as you're doing right by the person customer client

[00:25:19] patient in front of you that's the that's the thing and which is different

[00:25:23] than hey like I said before hey this is a great idea and I can make a lot of

[00:25:27] money from it a great idea and making a lot of money from it isn't there isn't

[00:25:31] gonna allow you to be successful because you don't believe in it and it's not

[00:25:34] gonna it's not gonna follow your passion it's just a great idea and you can make

[00:25:38] a lot of money and someone else is doing it but you got to figure out why this

[00:25:41] really goes back to the why like why are you into this for me it's to right the

[00:25:46] wrongs that have been done to me you know being denied health insurance and

[00:25:51] being you know basically showing up and you know waiting two hours and and told

[00:25:56] like by the signs and and the vibe like you're not really valued here as a

[00:26:01] patient you got to focus on helping others before you help yourself because

[00:26:05] helping you're the helping yourself is focusing on others it helps you if you're

[00:26:12] like if you're gonna come into PT business and you don't care about

[00:26:16] helping sick people or people who are injured or hurt I had a classmate in

[00:26:21] school said you know I asked like what brought you to PT school she said I

[00:26:25] don't know I don't like I don't like sick people I don't like working with

[00:26:28] sick people I'm like if someone else is like you know it you know what else is

[00:26:33] gonna do with a sports science degree you know I don't know be a banker you

[00:26:40] know this is this profession is about helping other people okay next you are

[00:26:45] willing to invest in the long-term outcome similar it's like what's the

[00:26:50] goal the goal isn't now look the goal isn't like I'm not here for the goal

[00:26:55] like and I love the work along the way but it's not about being here and saying

[00:27:02] hey I'm in it I'm gonna make money in 30 days I'm gonna start a business and in

[00:27:06] 30 days or in a year I'm gonna have everything I want there's a lot to do

[00:27:11] I'm in my like 25th year of business and I haven't done it all I've got a whole

[00:27:16] lot more to do and I couldn't have done it all in just five years I could have

[00:27:21] sped it up for sure you know cuz I've done a lot of things I probably spent

[00:27:25] time on or didn't do but you have to be willing to invest in the long-term

[00:27:29] outcome invest your time your effort your money in this long-term outcome

[00:27:36] especially PTs are much more willing to invest in like a degree than you are

[00:27:41] success in business and like I get it degree is something that you know isn't

[00:27:46] quite guaranteed but as long as you study and you get B's you can pass the

[00:27:49] test and you got a degree it's decently guaranteed you know schools are say hey

[00:27:54] 85 90% past rate on the NPTE okay great you give them two hundred fifty thousand

[00:27:59] dollars 95% past rate boom you give me two hundred fifty thousand dollars I

[00:28:04] can't guarantee 95% chance you'll be here in five years or ten or even one so

[00:28:11] you have to be willing to invest in the long-term outcome because this is a long

[00:28:14] game business success is a long game I'm 25 years into it I probably have

[00:28:19] another 25 or more to go I'll probably never not do something in business and

[00:28:25] I'm 50 so I got what 45 years to 50 depending on how long we live then be

[00:28:32] willing to invest in the long-term outcome or the the trait is that

[00:28:37] successful business owners have a long time horizon a view of a long time

[00:28:43] horizon like that's their view it's not a this year or this month view or even

[00:28:46] in five years it's like where am I going in ten years so even on the interview

[00:28:51] yesterday I asked Michael Murphy's like what are you seeing yourself in three to

[00:28:54] five years he's like I don't think that short I'm thinking like where am I

[00:28:56] gonna be in ten years or more I was like tell me about it all right talk about

[00:29:00] that your traits determine success he's not thinking about tomorrow he's

[00:29:05] thinking about ten years or more okay next kind of section I've just block of

[00:29:11] ideas successful business owners are solving a big problem and not just what

[00:29:17] they think is the problem but they're solving a real big problem people want

[00:29:21] solved not just what I think the problem is you have to go and survey your

[00:29:26] audience you have to know what they want problem solved and it has to be a big

[00:29:30] one you solve a big problem people pay you big money you solve a small problem

[00:29:34] people pay you small money you need a lot more people to do that and maybe and

[00:29:39] there's money in that but it's still a big problem it might be small for the

[00:29:43] individual big in numbers or small in numbers of people but big you know to

[00:29:49] them individually you have to solve that big problem you provide a solution

[00:29:54] or an easy button for that problem and you're gonna be successful successful

[00:29:57] entrepreneurs and business owners aren't here for the money and because it's a

[00:30:01] good idea I already went over this but because they followed their heart and

[00:30:03] listen to their customers like I said you listen to your customers and clients

[00:30:07] they'll they'll tell you what they want they'll tell you what they want you know

[00:30:12] you get enough of a following they'll start asking questions and tell you what

[00:30:16] they want you to help them with traits that determine success you don't like to

[00:30:19] be micromanaged if you don't like to be micromanaged you'll probably be

[00:30:23] successful as a business owner if you choose but maybe not maybe it's the

[00:30:28] other way around maybe successful business owners didn't like to be

[00:30:31] micromanaged or maybe that's just Aaron like I really hated being micromanaged

[00:30:34] but I hear this from my clients a lot they don't want to be micromanaged they

[00:30:37] want to be given an outcome and a goal and allowed to do the work on their in

[00:30:41] their own way and that's number one reason they go and build a business

[00:30:46] because like look I'm putting in all this work I'm being micromanaged and I'm

[00:30:49] putting it in the time for this other person let me just go do it for myself

[00:30:52] successful business owners have big dreams and they don't want their dreams

[00:30:56] to be limited or capped you got big dreams people are telling you your dreams

[00:31:01] are you know obnoxious and unreasonable they're too big you're probably on to

[00:31:06] the right thing when people are telling you when you get haters and trolls you're

[00:31:10] probably on to the right thing you don't want your dreams capped by other people

[00:31:14] so as long as you don't want your dreams capped by other people and you

[00:31:17] got big dreams and you're willing to go after it and you'll stop at nothing to

[00:31:20] get it but then it's you have unreasonable expectations of yourself

[00:31:23] and others this one's really tough I don't know this you know put this one at

[00:31:27] the end it's tough because I have unreasonable expectations like I'm

[00:31:30] almost never satisfied and if I look back at the results that I've achieved

[00:31:34] the people have helped I'm like I've done a lot you know you've done a lot I

[00:31:41] know you have but what are your expectations what's gonna push you and

[00:31:48] drive you it's it's not the perfection I'm not talking about I've been a

[00:31:52] reasonable expectation for perfection no it's for and not just one bettering

[00:31:57] myself every year it's for helping people and being in working hard and

[00:32:03] being good and doing doing good and also expecting other people on my team to to

[00:32:12] at least put in the same amount of effort that I'm putting in and I know

[00:32:16] they won't because it's my business not theirs I know no one else can be Aaron

[00:32:21] and you can't expect everyone else to be you but you can still have an

[00:32:26] unreasonable expectation that they should just in reality you have to

[00:32:29] understand that like if they're 80% as good as you or saving you time even

[00:32:33] there are 50% but this but they work hard and they're great people and they

[00:32:37] fit on your team and they're saving you a ton of time and making you money like

[00:32:41] it's there but you can still have unreasonable expectations you know

[00:32:45] because that's what drives things forward and if you can get a bunch of

[00:32:48] other fighter jets on your team just like Pedro's describes fighter jets and verse

[00:32:53] crop dusters you're a fighter jet you have unreasonable expectations of how

[00:32:59] fast you can go I want everyone else to be able to come on board and keep up and

[00:33:03] if you can't keep up you know you fall off okay great let's keep going and

[00:33:08] that's one of these other things I've started to learn over the last you know

[00:33:11] 10 years is you know as I go faster people are gonna people are gonna try to

[00:33:17] hold on and they can't and they're gonna let go or I'm gonna like have to let

[00:33:21] them go because I've got unreasonable expectations of myself and of other

[00:33:26] people and really like I don't know if it's unreasonable but a lot of times and

[00:33:31] talking about this like as a coach or as a physical therapist I believe in my

[00:33:35] clients and patients more than sometimes than they believe in themselves and

[00:33:39] that's okay but if you believe in yourself like I'm believing yourself

[00:33:46] didn't make this list because there's a lot of self-doubt that goes around which

[00:33:49] is totally fine if you believe in yourself or you start to believe in

[00:33:53] yourself you'll see you'll go far but I don't think that's a quality that needs

[00:33:58] to be on this list because do I believe in myself to do people I know really

[00:34:02] believe in themselves you know that they can actually do it I don't know that I

[00:34:06] would say that's debatable but it doesn't mean that I'm going to because so

[00:34:10] many people around you feed in this self-doubt about how these goals and

[00:34:15] aspirations are so like unreasonable that it's hard to feel like yeah I know

[00:34:21] I can do this some people do whatever it is but you have to have unreason this is

[00:34:27] the unreasonable expectations of your success of the effort everything you put

[00:34:32] that in you go hard every day no matter the mistakes or the wins or successes

[00:34:37] or the weather or the rain and you keep going because the last point is is

[00:34:42] successful business owners successful people they never quit because you only

[00:34:47] lose when you quit you will not lose if you don't quit no matter what happens in

[00:34:51] this current iteration of your business or life as long as you keep going and you

[00:34:55] keep moving forward taking step after step and you don't quit you will win

[00:35:01] because successful people don't quit and that is the key to success those are

[00:35:11] the traits that determine success thank you for listening and spending your time

[00:35:15] with me today hopefully you picked up some good pieces hopefully you went

[00:35:19] through we went through this list and you were like oh yeah dang raise my hand

[00:35:22] that's me if nothing on here resonated with you I don't know and you've got a

[00:35:27] successful business dude I'd love to hear about it but I'm not expecting you to

[00:35:30] reach out and let me know but I just love to know or for you to know like what

[00:35:35] things resonated with you what didn't and that's okay this isn't absolute this is

[00:35:40] my opinion and from 25 years of doing this in 50 years on the earth you know

[00:35:47] and I'm sure there are things I left out but does it matter no what really

[00:35:53] matters is what you do with the information and how you apply it to your

[00:35:56] business and go and help other people so go help some people today solve some

[00:36:01] big problems don't quit said or set unreasonable expectations don't quit and

[00:36:06] I'll see you on the next show peace out hey what's up it's Aaron thanks for
