I recently saw a patient, who was prescribed cervical retraction and sidebending exercises for paraesthesia in her left hand. This centralized and abolished those complaints rapidly, but 2 weeks after that she developed severe left shoulder pain. She was convinced it was her shoulder and did not want to do cervical resets despite them making the shoulder better. I had to really dig at why she didn't want to do the exercises. It turns out she had a great fear of her TMJ dislocating from the cervical motions, and was doing light overpressure on her jaw with her right hand. After I told her that I have prescribed these for over 25 years and have NEVER had a TMJ dislocation, she felt better about doing them. Plus, I performed the resets in NWB, got to her full end range and her shoulder pain was abolished and range improved to full from severely limited/painful.
