Multi Angle Isometrics for Deep Hip Pain

This week's MMT Pro Tip is a quick case in a hockey player. He was referred for labral tear, but even ortho acknowledged it's most likely an old injury and not causing his current pain.

While there were lumbar and ankle findings, he tested over 50% weaker on dynamometer with the Activforce 2 on R hip ER vs L hip ER. Hip adduction was about 25% weaker on the R as well.

On the first visit, R hip ER and adduction strength was prescribed. There was already a 25% improvement in pain in 2 days. On the second visit, I utilized multi-angle hip isometrics in ER in neutral, full ER and full IR. About 2 min in each position. Afterward, lunging, and running felt better.

Next time you have a patient with deep hip pain that can't be cleared with lumbar and hip treatment, check ER strength and try multi-angle isometrics.
