Often pain and tightness is just a perception. If you change the pattern of the movement you are testing, the threat associated with the movement is sometimes mitigated. Check out this example of a recent shoulder patient I saw where a LRF pattern and normal shoulder abduction and ER were very limited and painful, but changing the pattern actively she had full pain free elevation.
