MMT PRO TIP: Lateral Chain Assessment and Exercise for Difficult Lumbar Cases

This week's MMT Pro Tip is a simple Lateral Chain Assessment which turns into an exercise. I check lateral chain with either this or the LCAP - Lateral Chain Arm Pull. While I favor that test for live visits, in virtual or when LCAP isn't conclusive, I see how many reps of super clams and/or sideplanks a patient can do on the involved side vs the uninvolved side. The pattern is unilateral LQ issues tend to be weaker or have less endurance/less reps on the involved side. I.e. L lumbar pain, L hip or knee pain will be able to do 5-10 reps on the left and 20-30 on the right. The exercise prescription is simple, do reps to fatigue 1-2 times daily until the weaker side is equal to the stronger side. This often stabilizes difficult unilateral lumbar patients as well.
