How to "Fix" Low Back Pain for Clinicians

How to “Fix” Back Pain

First of all, let’s establish that back pain is a normal part of the human experience and something that doesn’t need to be feared or avoided. MOST back pain is minor- muscle strains, overuse, fatigue/tension from prolonged positions, etc.

If there are known significant traumas, symptoms such as weakness in the legs, loss of bowel/bladder control, back pain associated with fever and malaise and significantly disturbed sleep and not alleviated with rest snd OTC meds, these are signs of possible serious conditions that need to be thoroughly evaluated by a specialist.

Which brings me back to why I don’t love giving people advice on back pain treatment without having done my own evaluation on them. General advice like keeping moving and staying active is usually good but recommending specific movements can get tricky. While they may work for some, they won’t for all, so, as professionals, we need to be clear about our claims.

There are no magic exercises or movements that will prevent back pain, and there are an infinite number that are helpful- but so many factors are involved. Are cardiologists posting advice on chest pain? It’s not a homogeneous condition, like back pain, even if an overwhelming majority of back pain is “non-specific.”

I think nuance, while understandably frustrating for those in pain and looking for answers, is actually the most appropriate (and professional) approach.

The great thing about being a physio is that we have many ways to address back pain- movement, obviously, education/advice/reassurance is an undervalued powerful tool, manual therapy, and addressing sleep, nutrition, and stress may all be necessary for a comprehensive approach
