đź‘€Inhalation vs Exhalationđź‘€
When checking a patient's breathing patterns, make sure for someone who is "wound up," tense or loves trigger point work that they can fully exhale. Often those who exhale more than inhale are overly facilitated. An easy thing to teach, but harder to master is slowly and fully exhaling. Once they can fully exhale, can they hold without inhaling for a few more seconds. The net longer exhalation should wind down the nervous system and often reduce tenderness and tone. The PT in the example loved trigger point ball/cane work, but lightly palpating her upper traps and having her slowly exhale is a pain free way of getting rid of her left upper trap tenderness. That combined with cervical retraction and sidebending left and eventual weighted shrugs should be enough to abolish the left sided issues. Hope this helps!
